At our Wellesley, MA dentist’s office, we take oral cancer prevention seriously, and so should you. As it happens, our leader, Dr. Jeffrey Tocci, takes a “total health dentistry” approach to treating our patients. As such, we’ll make it easier to detect and treat anything that seems to be amiss in your mouth, so long as you are coming to see us every six months for a dental checkup.
Today we’d like to share some oral cancer prevention tips and risk factors to keep in mind. Read on, and then be sure to call us at 781-304-8172 to request your next appointment.
White, red, or speckled lumpy spots should command your attention. So should sores, raised bumps, open wounds, ulcers, bleeding in the mouth, pain or difficulty when swallowing, trouble moving your jaw, and the like. Make sure you let us know right away if you are dealing with any such things. And try to minimize the following risk factors when they are areas that you have control over.
Here’s your wake up call: tobacco use is actually the #1 cause of oral cancer in this country. Of course, it goes without saying that if you aren’t currently using tobacco, it would be better for you if you don’t ever start.
Since tobacco use astronomically increases your risk of oral and other types of cancer, if you already vape, smoke, chew, or dip, it is time to think about putting these habits behind you. Besides possibly killing you, these things will also destroy your smile over time. And nobody wants that either.
It isn’t really a big surprise (to us at least) that alcohol abuse is another significant risk factor as far as oral cancer goes. If you smoke and drink, that is an even worse combination. Consider this: alcohol dries out the soft tissues of your mouth. This can make it easier for the chemicals in tobacco to get into those tissues and do the deadly damage that it does.
Junk Food Binges
As a comprehensive dental practice, we want you to be more mindful overall of what goes into your body. What is junk food? A good rule of thumb is to consider whether or not your grandma would recognize the item in question as food at all. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can actually lower your risk for mouth cancer. So, why not focus on eating more of these things?
We all love the sun. So, when you bask in the rays, don’t get too much, and always use protection like a high SPF level sunscreen. Sunburns have been linked not only to skin cancer, but to cancer on your lips as well.
Unfortunately, if you have a history of cancer in your family your chances of developing oral cancer is much higher, which means you will need to be more diligent about everything else.
Oral cancer prevention and detection is easier when you have a dentist you can trust to keep an eye on your mouth. Our office has invested in the sort of tools, training, and technology that makes a difference in your health and your well-being at every stage of life. It will be up to you to take advantage of everything we can do for you along the way.
