There are a number of reasons why your teeth might be hurting. Today we want to explore a few of those reasons. Here we want to show 3 common reasons why your teeth might be hurting.

Pains From Dental Decay

Cavities often cause sensitivity or sharp pains in the tooth. It’s common to experience dental pain from hot or cold sensations.

There are a few layers of the tooth. The enamel, dentin, dental pulp and the root. The enamel is the outer layer of the tooth and the hardest substance in the body, but even the enamel can break down. When decay penetrates the enamel, it can expose the dentin or even make its way through the inner layers of the tooth. Exposed dentin can be sensitive to a number of foods and drinks. We’re treating tooth decay with tooth-colored fillings. These are made from high-strength ceramic material that bonds with the tooth and blends in with your natural smile.

It’s important to catch the decay before it reaches the dental pulp. Extensive dental decay can lead to larger, more extensive dental problems. Infected dental pulp is typically resolved through the process of a root canal therapy. Once we clean out the infection, it will need to be restored with a dental crown.

Sensitivity From Gum Disease

Gum disease is extremely common and the number one cause of tooth loss. In America, about 50 percent of all adults will struggle with gum disease and that number goes up to about 70 percent for people 65 and older. The problem with gum disease is that it can strike with little to no warning and quickly take over the mouth.

The first stage of gum disease, gingivitis is curable, but the later stages of gum disease are not. Periodontitis is the most advanced of gum disease. This serious stage of gum disease can cause the teeth and gums to pull apart, and the infection can move on to infect and erode the bone. Periodontitis is notorious for causing teeth to become loose in the socket and eventually fail.

Tocci Dental Associates is treating gum disease with state-of-the-art technology.

Tooth Sensitivity From TMJ

Dysfunction with the temporomandibular joint can cause patients to grinding or clench their teeth involuntarily. The clenching and grinding, which usually happens while you’re sleeping, can increase the risk of tooth fractures, tooth cracks, or even gum recession. The constant pressure on the teeth can cause the enamel to erode, and people also wake up with constant headaches and sore jaws.

It’s common for people with TMJ problems to take medication to treat the headaches and jaw problems. Tocci Dental Associates has a drug-free option for treating TMJ issues. The system is called TruDenta, which evaluates the head and jaw muscles, range of motion, and bite forces.

The system uses an oral appliance, neuromuscular therapy to relax the joint muscle, ultrasound therapy, cold laser therapy, and nutritional counseling to help take the tension off the jaw.
