Learn Ways To Address TMJ Disorder At Home
TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint, which is basically just a technical term for your jaw joints. Jaw joints are actually very complex and TMJ disorder (TMD) is not yet fully understood by the medical field because there are many different ways TMD can affect a particular patient. To address this diversity of causes and symptoms, we can recommend a wide variety of at-home solutions for you to try.
One of the many potential causes of or contributing factors to TMD is stress. Many people clench their jaw or grind their teeth without thinking about it when they are feeling anxious or on-edge. One very simple method of addressing this is to practice relaxation techniques, like breathing exercises. We can recommend and demonstrate many breathing techniques.
You can also avoid putting stress on your jaw muscles by making small (and temporary) changes to your diet. These adjustments are all about helping your jaw to recover and heal. Here are just a few things you can try to help you your jaw rest:
- Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes, apple sauce, cottage cheese, etc.
- Cut food into smaller pieces so you won’t have to open your mouth as wide and chewing will be easier
- Skip sticky or chewy foods like taffy, caramel apples, jerky, etc.
- Don’t chew gum
Just like you can rub your feet to relieve soreness after a long day on your feet, you can also massage your jaw to alleviate some of the tension and pain that you may be experiencing. You can perform this massage yourself or have a friend or family member help you. We’ll provide pointers and walk you through some techniques in our office.
Another approach that may help is applying a cold pack or warm, moist heat to your jaw joints. Depending on your case you can use either of these or alternate as you would with just about any strained muscle. If you can get comfortable with one, you can even sleep with a warm compress.
If all these techniques don’t help you, you can try over-the-counter muscle relaxers. You may want to speak with your general physician about any other medications you may be taking before you begin taking any muscle relaxers.
