Protect Your Favorite Smiles with Mouthguards

Mouthguards 3 | Tocci Dental Associates - Wellesley, MA Dentist

There’s nothing like watching your little ones run around the field, playing hard, and having fun. Seeing how much they enjoy playing makes you happy.

But nothing will ruin that enjoyment faster than an injury.

As much fun as sports can be, we also know that sports come with some risk as well. That’s why we expect our kids to wear the proper equipment for whatever sports they play.

That could mean a helmet for baseball or softball, shin guards for soccer, and knee and elbow pads for skateboarding. One thing all athletes should be doing, however, is protecting their teeth and jaws.

It’s also why your budding sports stars should be wearing athletic mouthguards when they take the court, the field, the ice, or the track.

The best protection comes from mouthguards that fit correctly. That’s why we offer custom-fitted mouthguards — for children and adults — at Tocci Dental Associates in Wellesley, MA.

To get mouthguards for all the athletes in your family, call (781) 304-8172 today to schedule an appointment.

Should You Be Wearing a Mouthguard?

The short answer is probably yes. Anyone who plays a high-impact sport should wear one.

But what exactly is a high-impact sport? All the sports we mentioned earlier (baseball, soccer, and skateboarding) are examples. So are cheerleading, tennis, and volleyball.

And yes, football and lacrosse definitely a high-impact sport, too.

For our purposes, a high-sports involves one or more of the following:

  • Physical contact between athletes
  • Frequent jumping
  • Frequent changes in direction or speed
  • Objects (such as balls or pucks) that are thrown or struck as part of the competition

Knowing these criteria, you can probably think of several more sports that would qualify as “high-impact.”

Mouthguards are like seat belts in your car. If you wouldn’t let your children ride in your car without buckling their seat belt, then you shouldn’t let them take the field without a sports mouthguard, either.

Mouthguards won’t stop an accident from happening. They can minimize the severity of an injury you, your child, or your spouse receives if an accident does occur.

The American Dental Association has reported that athletes who don’t wear mouthguard are 60 more likely to suffer dental injuries than athletes who do.

Each year, more than 3 million teeth are knocked out during youth sports, while approximately 200,000 teeth are saved because someone was wearing a mouthguard.

We can’t help wondering how different those numbers might look if more athletes wore mouthguards. A recent survey of parents by the American Association of Orthodontists revealed that just 16 percent of kids wear mouth protection during practices and games. That’s far too low, in our opinion.

Better Fit Offers Better Protection

Imagine that you have been asked to deliver an ancient, but fragile vase to a museum. How would you transport it?

Would you leave it in the car seat next to you? Would you toss it into an empty box?

Or would you place it in a case with custom-designed foam padding made specifically for that vase?

We bet you picked the last option. And we also suspect your family’s smiles are more valuable to you than any vase, no matter how old it might be.

This is just one reason a custom-fitted mouthguard is a better option than the mouthguards you’ll find in sporting goods departments and stores.

Boil-and-bite mouthguards are certainly better than nothing, but they can be bulky, too. This can make them less comfortable to wear. We’ve heard athletic say that their size made it difficult to breathe. This also made it difficult to communicate with their teammates and coaches.

Custom-fitted mouthguards are molded to fit each individual’s teeth. This means we can make them smaller, too. As a result, you won’t feel like you need to take out your mouthguard to breathe, shout something to your teammate, or get a drink of water.

We hope you’ll agree with us that those are all important thing for athletes to be able to do.
