Tocci Dental Associates understands that sleep plays a huge role in your overall health. Sleep apnea is especially a dangerous problem that can lead to an increased risk of problems like weight gain, heart disease, or even stroke. It’s also possible to die from complications with sleep apnea because the issue can cause people to stop breathing entirely. Today we want to highlight some of the risks of leaving sleep apnea untreated and then tell you how our oral appliance can help.

The Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common problem in adults, especially men 40 and older. It will affect about 18 million Americans. There are two forms of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea, with obstructive sleep apnea being the most common. Sleep apnea is dangerous because it literally causes pauses in breathing. People with severe sleep apnea experience as many as 30 pauses in breathing every hour! During those episodes, the blood pressure will rise and most people experience audible gasps for air. The frequent rises in blood pressure will cause the patient to have higher blood pressure throughout the day. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart problems and even stroke.

Here are some other risks and problems associated with sleep apnea:

  • Weight gain or diabetes (sleep apnea can disrupt a person’s metabolism)
  • Constant fatigue (waking up feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep)
  • Moodiness
  • Increased risk of car accidents (drowsiness or sleepy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving)

Sleep apnea is a problem that affects your mind and your body. It affects your performance at work and even personal relationships. We ask every patient about how they’re sleeping during their six month cleanings! If you need a full clinical screening, then you’ll set that up for you.

Treating Your Sleep Apnea

People often associate sleep apnea treatment with the CPAP. The CPAP is the gold standard of treatment for people with sleep apnea, but people find that the machine intolerable. The CPAP uses a machine, hose, and mask. The mask can sometimes actually disrupt a person’s sleep and the noise of the machine can sometimes disrupt the sleep partner! Studies have found that patients with sleep apnea wear the CPAP only about 50 percent of the time. That’s not a good compliance rate, as the machine only works when it’s on your face.

Now there is a better way to treat patients with sleep apnea, especially obstructive sleep apnea. People with mild to moderate sleep apnea are often candidates for an oral appliance. The oral appliance sits on the bottom teeth and gently moves the jaw forward to keep the airway open while you sleep. The appliance is comfortable and does not disrupt your sleep or your bed partner’s sleep. It’s also easy to travel with. Our patients notice a change almost immediately.
