Your oral hygiene routine can dramatically impact your health, not to mention the appearance of your smile. That’s why you’ll want to keep up with your preventive dental cleanings and exams by scheduling them every 3-6 months. We assume that brushing your teeth twice a day is a given. But today we’d like to offer a few more dental tips that can help keep your smile clean and healthy through every stage of life. Read on, and then be sure to call Tocci Dental Associates in Wellesley, MA at 781-304-8172 to request your next appointment.
1. Brush Better By Brushing Longer
At a minimum you should brush your teeth once in the morning and again at night. Most patients grasp the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day, but in most cases they aren’t brushing for the proper amount of time.
The ADA guidelines state that you ought to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Here’s why: plaque can cause plenty of problems for you but it is a relatively soft substance, so you don’t need to scrub your teeth harder to eradicate plaque. But if you brush a little longer and make sure you cover those hard to reach areas, you’ll be doing your smile a huge favor.
2. Establish That Flossing Is Non-Negotiable
No matter what kind of toothbrush you have, it’s impossible to effectively clean every part of the tooth, especially the parts that exist below the gum line. So, flossing takes your oral hygiene routine further by allowing you to clean in between the teeth and beneath the gum line. And tartar that is left alone beneath the gums can cause gum disease, which in turn can cause tooth loss. Nobody wants that. Do your part by flossing every day, no matter what!
3. Watch What Goes In Your Mouth
We want you to be mindful of what goes into your mouth. Here’s a great example: soda pop tastes great and has all of those refreshing bubbles. But when drinking sodas becomes a daily habit, it can quickly lead to tooth decay. This is because the majority of soda options have something like 40 grams of sugar per bottle, which is a staggering amount of sugar for something that isn’t even food. If you want to keep smiling, take a look at your dietary habits and make healthier choices!
4. Find The Fluoride
Fluoride intake can greatly reduce your risk of tooth decay and can even restore damaged enamel. In many cities, public drinking water already includes some added fluoride, and at our office we can set you up fluoride treatments as part of our preventive dentistry program. But to really make sure you’re keeping your teeth safe and clean, always try to go with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. This is an easy way to add some protection.
