No set of teeth are the same, and there are several reasons your teeth or mouth might hurt. But today we want to examine the reasons your teeth might hurt.
Untreated Cavities Can Be Painful
Cavities occur whenever tooth decay has eaten through the enamel of your teeth. The enamel is the strongest substance in the body, but even it can be damaged. Some of us are unfortunately more susceptible to tooth decay, or we simply don’t have great at-home oral care routines. Some patients experience a huge amount of dental pain as the result of a small cavity, while others have large cavities and feel nothing. This dental pain usually comes whenever we’re eating or consuming hot or cold food or beverages. It’s important to restore cavities with filling (we’re using tooth-colored fillings) because tooth decay weakens the tooth, AND untreated tooth decay can make its way to the tooth’s root, which requires more time in the dental chair and additional costs.
Sensitive Teeth or Gums From Gum Disease
Gum disease is a major oral health problem. It’s the leading cause of missing teeth in adults and has been linked to serious problems like heart disease and diabetes. Some of the first signs of gum disease are swollen gums or bleeding gums. But it’s also common for patients to experience tooth or gum sensitivity.
Our office uses gentle techniques to remove infections from your teeth or gums. It’s important to catch gum disease early. Gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, can be reversed, but periodontitis is the most serious form of gum disease and cannot be reversed. We recommend that patients with serious gum disease visit our dental office once every three to four months so we can manage any issues in the gums.
Tooth Pain Can be Cause by TMJ Problems
Problems with the TMJ (the joint responsible for opening and closing your mouth) can cause tooth pain or tenderness in your jaw or facial muscles. People with TMJ problems often clinch or clench their teeth involuntarily. You need to correct these issues, as they can increase the risk of tooth trauma or even gum recession. Some dentists can treat these problems with an oral appliance, but at Tocci Dental Associates, is using a more comprehensive way to treat these issues problems without drugs or surgery!
Here are a few things we can do:
- Provide custom oral appliances to move jaw into a more appropriate location and to stop habits like grinding or clenching.
- Therapy with ultrasounds or cold laser therapy to help the muscles and joints
Overtime, we can move the jaw and resolve TMJ-related problems like tooth pain or tension headaches.
