Today there are a few facts about dental crowns you need to know.

1. Crowns protect/save your teeth

Whenever a tooth is damaged and cannot be repaired with a simple tooth filling, then it’s likely you’ll need a crown to restore the tooth. We’re also using the crown to restore teeth after root canals. To place the crown, we’ll prepare the tooth and remove the enamel. Then, we’ll take an impression to make sure we fit the crown perfectly over the teeth. The crown, often called a cap, is cemented to the tooth to keep the tooth functional and strong.

2. Crowns do not last forever

Crowns are considered a long-term solution, but nothing is permanent. It’s impossible to tell how long a crown will last. Dental insurance companies will cover the cost of a crown about once every five years. And many studies have found that the average crown can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, though it’s often to see crowns last much longer!

At Tocci Dental Associates, we’re using digital impressions to make sure we can find the most perfect fit for the crown. If we find a great fit for the crown, it will increase the lifespan of the crown.

3. Crowns should match your natural smile

Whenever you have a crown, it’s important that it matches your natural smile. No one wants a crown that sticks out like a sore thumb. Luckily, crowns are more lifelike than ever before. In the past, dentists have used gold and metal for crowns AND even ceramics fused to metal. All metal  or gold crowns stick out like a sore thumb, while metal-based crowns often create a gray line along the gum line.

Our office is using all-ceramic crowns. These crowns are made from one solid chunk of ceramic material, AND every aspect of the crown fits your natural smile. No one will be able to tell you have a dental crown

When you come to Tocci Dental Associates, we’re using CEREC technology to provides crowns in a single visit. Most dentists place crowns over the course of two or three visits, but our office does this in just one day, within 90 minutes! You can do all of this over the course of a long lunch break.

The benefit of same-day crowns is that you don’t have to wear a temporary crown — which patients find to be a huge hassle — or deal with goopy impressions because everything is digital. After we take a digital impression of the tooth, we send that impression to a computer. Then, we’ll design the crown and send it to a milling machine right in our dental lab. So, instead of waiting a few weeks or even longer for your crown, we’ll have to ready for you in about 90 minutes. Additionally, because we don’t need an outside dental lab to create the crown, we can make any adjustments on the spot.

We hope these facts about dental crowns help you understand more about restorative dentistry.
