We’ve found that many people understand the benefits of brushing their teeth twice a day, but they aren’t brushing long enough. People tend to scrub their teeth too hard and don’t brush long enough. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. The reason is simple. Plaque is a relatively soft substance, so you don’t need to scrub your teeth hard to remove it. Just brush longer and make sure you reach every corner of your mouth.

2. Never forget to floss

You’ve probably heard of this tip for years. We dentists love to remind our patients about the importance of flossing. Here’s a statistic that might encourage you to floss: About 35 percent of the tooth is located beneath the gum line. Even with the best toothbrush, it’s difficult to clean every portion of the tooth. Floss is a great way to clean in between the teeth and beneath the gum line. It’s important to clean beneath the gum line because tartar buildup beneath the gums can cause gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss.

3. More soda means more tooth decay

It shouldn’t be a surprise that consuming soda can causes tooth decay. You probably already know that drinking loads of soda is terrible for your overall health and oral health. A recent study from the University of Michigan found that consuming three or more sodas a day drastically increases your chances of having tooth decay, by about 62 percent. Most sodas have about 30 to 40 grams of sugar, which is more than the recommended daily allotment of sugar. And while diet soda does not contain sugar, it is highly acidic and can also damage your teeth.

4. Don’t forget to use fluoride-based toothpaste

Fluoride is a natural substance that has been proven to reduce the risk of tooth decay and can even restore damaged enamel. Most public drinking water includes fluoride, and we even offer fluoride treatments in our office for patients who have a higher risk of tooth decay.
