Missing just one dental visit can have a negative impact on your oral health.

Small problems can turn into big problems

Great dentistry is about infection prevention and infection control. Problems like tooth decay and gum disease occur when infections are present in the mouth. That’s a problem because an infection will not go away on its own; rather it will continue to spread. To reduce your risk of these problem, visit our office once every six months. During your regular cleanings and exams, we’ll carefully examine the teeth and gums to make sure there are no signs of a problem. If we do spot something, we’ll correct small issues before they develop into something larger.

It’s a shame to let a small cavity or a minor gum issue turn into a major issue that is often painful — and expensive to repair.

Gum disease can strike with little to no warning

Gum disease is an invasive and overall health issue that also happens to be the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Unfortunately, the problems with gum disease do not end in your mouth. Recent studies have found that gum disease is linked to serious medical issues like heart disease and diabetes. While there is no real cause-and-effect, we know that all of these issues deal with inflammation in the body. And we know that people with gum disease at a higher risk of these issues.

Gum disease can happen fast but comes in waves. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, and it usually happens with bleeding or swollen gums. This is curable, but the most advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis, is not curable. Periodontitis can cause the teeth and gums to pull apart, eventually causes the tooth to become loss and fail. People with periodontitis will need maintenance for the rest of their lives. We recommend that patients with gum disease visit the dentist about once every three to four months for cleanings and maintenance.

We’ll keep your smile fresh and bright

During your cleanings, our dental hygienists will scale and polish the teeth while remove harmful bacteria. This allows us to remove the plague and tartar buildup on the teeth. The polishing makes it harder for plague and harmful material to stick to the surface of the teeth. Cleaning the teeth helps us reduce the risk of cavities and keeps the smile looking great. A professional cleaning will also make your breath fresh!

Be ready to make changes to your smile

One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. It’s important for the smile to look great. Sometimes we see patients inquiring about orthodontic services or cosmetic dentistry services, but it turns out they need some restorative dental care. No dentist is going to complete orthodontic treatments or whiten your teeth if your mouth isn’t unhealthy. You need to be free of problems like tooth decay and gum disease before your treatment.

We regularly see patients inquiring about cosmetic services, but find that they have cavities or failing fillings that need to be addressed. So, instead of the patient immediately working on the smile they want, they have to go through a few restorative treatments first. This adds time and cost to your treatments. If you keep your smile healthy by visiting the dental office once every six months, you can start additional procedures whenever you wish.

We’ll do that extra exam

Most people don’t consider their dentist as someone who can save their life, but it’s true. Not only can we fight off infections linked to serious overall health issues, but we can identify problems like oral cancer in its early stages. Oral cancers are often related to lumpy spots, raised bumps, or white lesions in the mouth. Our office is trained to spot these problems in the early stages. Oral cancer has a high survival rate if caught in its early stages, but it’s much less treatable in its later stages.

We can do the extra oral cancer exam during your regular cleanings and exams. We know many of the risk factors of oral cancer, but NOT every risk factor (heavy smokers and drinkers face the highest risk), so everyone should be evaluated for this problem.
